Why Skills Don't Generalize

My child learned this skill, so they should be able to do it everywhere. They're just being difficult.

🧠 What Is Actually Happening

Autistic children often learn skills in specific contexts and struggle to apply them in new contexts. This is context-dependent learning, not refusal.

Skill generalization difficulties in autism reflect limited transfer of learning across contexts.

**Context-Dependent Learning:** Most autistic children learn skills in a specific context: - "Say please" is learned at the dinner table - "Wait for your turn" is learned during a specific game - "Raise your hand" is learned in a specific classroom

The child learns the behavior, but it's bound to the context where they learned it. The brain doesn't automatically know the skill applies to other situations.

This is called context-dependent learning or stimulus-specific learning.

**Why It Happens:** Autistic children often process details more than the "big picture." They notice: - The specific table where you practiced - The specific people present - The specific way the instruction was phrased

They notice these details so intensely that the specific context becomes part of the skill itself.

When the context changes (new table, new people, new phrasing), the brain doesn't recognize it as the same situation, so the learned skill doesn't activate.

**Transfer of Learning:** Neurotypical children automatically transfer skills. If they learn "say please" at dinner, their brain generalizes: "I should say please in situations where I want something."

Autistic children need explicit teaching in multiple contexts before they understand: "This rule applies in many different situations."

**How to Build Generalization:** - Teach the skill in multiple environments - Use different people - Vary the circumstances - Explicitly point out the similarity: "Remember at home we said please? Here at school, we also say please when we want something."

Over time (usually many repetitions), the rule becomes more abstract and applies across contexts.

✅ What You Can Do Today

Teach the skill in multiple places: home, school, park, store. Different contexts = multiple learning opportunities.

Use different people. If only one person uses the instruction, the child may associate it with that person only.

Explicitly connect contexts: "Remember how we said please at home? We also say please at the store. Both places, we say please when we want something."

❌ What Not To Do

❌ Assume learning in one place means learning everywhere. Generalization must be explicitly taught.

❌ Use the exact same phrasing every time. Varying the language helps extract the underlying rule.

❌ Punish lack of generalization. The brain isn't making the connection; it's not refusal.
