❓ What Parents Usually Think

My child understands the task. They're just being lazy or refusing to do it.

🧠 What Is Actually Happening

Some autistic children understand what to do but struggle with task initiation and motor planning. It's not refusal; it's initiation difficulty.

Task initiation deficits in autism reflect motor planning and executive function difficulties distinct from comprehension.

**Task Initiation vs. Task Execution:** A child might understand "get dressed" completely. They can explain the steps. They know how to do it.

But initiating the first action — actually starting to move — is a separate neurological process.

**Why This Happens:** Motor planning (generating a sequence of movements and executing them) involves the basal ganglia, supplementary motor area (SMA), and premotor cortex.

Some autistic children have difficulty with: - Generating an internal motor plan (knowing which movement to make first) - Self-cueing (using internal signals to initiate movement) - Motor sequencing (organizing movements in proper order)

This is different from strength or ability. It's difficulty with the brain's signal to "go."

**Praxis Deficits:** Praxis is the ability to plan, organize, and execute purposeful movements. Some autistic children have developmental dyspraxia (impaired praxis).

A child with dyspraxia might understand "tie your shoes" but struggle to organize the motor movements needed to do it.

**How to Help:** - Provide external cues: "Take off your shirt. Now put on the blue one." - Break into smaller steps: Instead of "get dressed," say "Take off pajama top." - Physical prompting: Sometimes starting the movement (physically helping the first motion) allows the brain to continue - Repetition: After many repetitions, the task becomes automatic and initiation gets easier

**When It's Not Laziness:** If your child: - Understands the task completely - Has done it before successfully - Wants to do it (or at least is willing) - But still can't seem to start

It's not laziness. It's initiation or motor planning difficulty.

✅ What You Can Do Today

Provide external cues: Name each small step. "First, take off your pajamas. Now put on your shirt. Now put on your pants."

Break into tiny steps: "Get dressed" is too abstract. Start with "Take off your pajama top."

Physical support: Sometimes physically helping start the motion (moving their arm toward the shirt) gets the brain engaged enough to continue.

❌ What Not To Do

❌ Call it laziness. The brain genuinely struggles with self-initiated action.

❌ Keep explaining. More explanation won't help motor planning. External cues (telling them each step) help more.

❌ Wait for the child to suddenly start. Provide the cue.
