Understanding Your Child's Brain
My child is defiant and refuses to listen to instructions.
Following multi-step instructions requires working memory, language comprehension, executive function, and motor planning. Difficulty with any of these looks like defiance but isn't.
Following instructions requires the coordination of multiple cognitive domains:
**Language Comprehension:** Autistic children may understand individual words but struggle with complex syntax. "Put your shoes on and get your backpack" requires understanding two actions, their sequence, and that both need to happen.
**Working Memory:** Working memory is the mental "holding space" for information. Many autistic children have smaller working memory capacity, so three-step instructions exceed their limit. They remember step 1 but forget steps 2 and 3.
**Executive Function - Task Initiation:** Some children understand the instruction fully but struggle to begin the task. This isn't laziness; it's a neurological difficulty with generating the motor plan to start. Asking "Are you going to do it?" or "What's the first step?" can help bridge this gap.
**Motor Planning (Praxis):** Even if the child understands what to do, executing a multi-step sequence requires intact motor planning. Children with weak praxis understand "get dressed" but don't have an organized motor plan for the sequence of actions.
**Attention & Distractibility:** The child begins the task but gets distracted halfway through. This isn't defiance; it's that their attention shifted to something more interesting or they forgot the next step.
**Why "Just Do It" Doesn't Work:** Telling a child with working memory challenges to "hold five steps in mind" is like telling someone with poor vision to "just see better." They can't, even if they want to.
Break instructions into single steps. "Put on your shoes" instead of "Put on your shoes, grab your backpack, and meet me at the door."
Use visual supports. A picture of shoes, then a picture of backpack, then a picture of the door helps working memory.
Allow processing time after each step before giving the next instruction.
❌ Give multiple steps at once. Working memory can't hold them all.
❌ Use complex language. "Could you possibly...?" is harder to parse than "Put on shoes."
❌ Walk away assuming they understand. Check in. "What's the first thing you're going to do?"
