Transitions require cognitive flexibility and task disengagement, which are genuinely harder for autistic brains. It's not resistance; it's difficulty.

**Cognitive Rigidity:** Autistic children often have what's called "cognitive rigidity" — once their brain is engaged in an activity, it's harder to switch to something else.

This isn't stubbornness. It's a neurological trait. Research shows autistic individuals have reduced flexibility in the prefrontal cortex systems that allow task switching.

**Why Transitions Are Hard:** - The current activity (playing with toys, watching TV) is highly rewarding to the child's brain - Starting a new activity means leaving that reward (even if only temporarily) - The new activity may be less rewarding or may be uncertain - Changing activities requires generating a new motor plan and abandoning the current one - Many autistic children have anxiety about transitions because the new activity is unknown

**Predictability as a Stabilizer:** Routines are calming because they're predictable. Transitions introduce unpredictability, which increases anxiety.

A child who has a routine of: home → play → dinner → bath → bed knows exactly what to expect. But an unexpected transition ("We're leaving to go to the store") introduces uncertainty and threat.

**Preparation Reduces Difficulty:** Warning ("We're leaving in 5 minutes") gives the child's brain time to: - Process the transition cognitively - Disengage from the current activity gradually - Generate a motor plan for the new activity - Reduce anxiety about the change

✅ What You Can Do Today

Give warnings before transitions. "In 5 minutes, we're leaving. In 2 minutes. In 30 seconds." This gives the brain time to disengage.

Use visual schedules. A picture of what comes next reduces anxiety about the unknown.

⏱️

Make the next activity appealing. "After your bath, we're doing [preferred thing]." This gives the brain a reason to transition.

❌ What Not To Do

❌ Surprise transitions. "We're leaving NOW!" triggers anxiety and resistance.

❌ Rush the transition. Let the brain have time to shift gears.

❌ Act like the resistance is defiance. It's a genuine neurological challenge.
