Understanding Your Child's Brain
My child is being stubborn and won't move on to something else.
Getting stuck (perseveration) reflects difficulty disengaging from the current focus. It's not stubbornness; it's a neurological difficulty with task switching.
Perseveration (getting stuck on an idea or activity) and hyperfocus (intense, sustained attention) are related phenomena in autism.
**Hyperfocus:** Many autistic children have the ability to focus intensely on topics or activities they're interested in. They can spend hours on a preferred activity without tiring or getting bored.
This intense focus is a strength. It allows for deep learning and passion development.
But it also means difficulty disengaging. Once the brain is engaged with a preferred topic, it's hard to shift away.
**Perseveration:** Perseveration is when the brain gets "stuck" on a thought, idea, or activity and can't move on, even when the person wants to.
A child might want to go to dinner but their brain is still stuck on the Lego tower they were building. They keep thinking about it, talking about it, wanting to go back to it.
**Why It Happens:** The prefrontal cortex (which handles task switching and disengagement) is less efficient in autistic brains. Once a task or topic is activated, turning it off requires active mental effort.
It's like having a song stuck in your head. You can't just decide to not think about it. It takes time and sometimes a distraction to finally let it go.
**When It's a Problem:** Perseveration becomes limiting when: - It prevents the child from transitioning to necessary activities - It causes the child distress (they want to stop but can't) - It interferes with learning new skills
**When It's a Strength:** Hyperfocus becomes a superpower when: - The focused topic becomes expertise - The deep focus allows for mastery - The passion becomes a career path
Warn before disengagement: "In 5 minutes, we're stopping Lego." This preps the brain to disengage.
Help find a stopping point: "Can you finish this tower?" or "Can you do one more thing, then stop?" Having an endpoint helps.
Offer a bridge activity: "After Lego, we're doing [something mildly interesting]." This gives the brain a reason to switch.
❌ Abruptly stop the activity. This triggers distress and resistance.
❌ Tell them to "just stop thinking about it." They can't disengage by willpower alone.
❌ Punish the difficulty. This is neurological, not volitional.
